内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Research and theory on shame and guilt have received considerable attention in the last decades and have implied that these emotions have moral function. Nevertheless, the relation of shame and guilt to moral behavior, especially prosocial behavior, has been little examined and discussed. This article reviews various theoretical and empirical works on prosocial behavior and shame or guilt. First, prosocial behavior is defined and the process of prosocial behavior is described. Second, anticipatory guilt over inaction, self-regulatory function of shame and guilt, and the likelihood of the role of guilt or shame in the process of prosocial behavior are discussed. Third, the relation of social emotions, especially guilt, to other-oriented empathy that is the main factor in generating prosocial behavior is discussed from the constructive and developmental perspectives. Finally, a model stating that the relation between other-oriented empathy and prosocial behavior is mediated by guilt is presented.
